In The 80/10/10 Diet book, pages 246 to 250, it shows that diet is an influential factor for obtaining vitamin B12: Seaweeds contain significant amounts of noncobalamin analogs of B12, which interfere with the absorption of true B12. 1) Our produce no longer contains vitamin B12. 2) We wash our produce. 3) We can not absorb the B12 we eat. A high-fat diet substantially increases the risk of a vitamin B12 deficiency. 4) We can not compare ourselves to those who are supplementing their food at almost every meal, mostly from enriched grain products.
