If you get fruit that doesn't ripen properly, return it, or at least tell them about it, bring a sample, and ask for a refund. A bad banana or two, a moldy orange per case, or such is acceptable, but not an entire bad batch. Last year I got 10 cases of persimmon that had been cooled so severely that they went bad rather than ripening. Refund time. When I get bad mangoes, refunds are in order. It is a bit of trouble, but worth the money to keep your suppliers accountable. I get some of my fruit from Covent Garden market, and am about to revamp my efforts at getting better quality foods. I've gone to Spittlefields for fruit, which was quite a joy, but a long trip for me. My supplier is about to move, leaving me to fend for myself again, but he says he'll give me his contact list. I'll gladly share the list when I get it. Surprisingly, other than the cost, I do fairly well between using both Sainesbury's and Tesco's. Usually, I can get whatever I need there, and one will have what the other does not. I am learning to produce more from my own garden, too. Gardening is an investment in time, but the quality of the food coming from the garden is incomparable, second to none.
