Absorption and utilization of iron is done in several different ways, depending upon diet. It is possible to experience problems in this regard, especially if the vegan diet is relatively new to you.
If you are an elite athlete, you need everything working perfectly for you in order to perform at your best. Sometimes, during transitions to 811, there can be a lag that leaves you relatively low in ferritin. This is extremely uncommon with endurance athletes, but anything is possible.
