I store my ripening fruit (like bananas and persimmons) or fruit that doesn't need refrigeration (like tomatoes) in their cases (cardboard boxes) stacked on each other on the floor. When the bananas are ripe, I put them in the refrigerator to keep them from going bad. I recycle the boxes when done with them.
