Hi Dr. Graham.

I'm trying to lose a bit of weight and have been on 80/10/10 for about a year.

First I tried the eat all you want approach, but I didn't lose a thing. I felt great, and was very athletically active (1-2 hours a day mixing long-distance running, intense short duration cardio (gassers, etc) and strength training) but no weight loss.

So now during the last month and a half I'm eating enough to lose one pound of fat per week, and it's working.

My problem is that I get really bad insomnia when I do this, and I'm actually declining in muscle mass while losing fat.

Sometimes I can't fall asleep at night at all or only after hours of thrashing in bed.

Sometimes I'll fall asleep at 9:30 p.m., my normal time, but then I'm awake again at 3 a.m. and won't sleep again all night.

This wouldn't be so bad if I felt rested after that short sleep, but I don't. I feel exhausted and I'm not recovering from my athletic performance. I want to sleep but I can't.

Most annoying of all I'm declining in strength and seem to be losing muscle.

Simple things like pull ups are getting hard, and on my scale that reads BF, Muscle, water, etc, it says I'm losing muscle mass as well as fat.

Do you have any suggestions for overcoming this?

I'm really concerned about the muscle loss (which I've worked hard to put on) and the insomnia, which is really screwing with my productivity during the day.

Thanks.
