Hi sweetbananas, I've found the best romaine lettuce is the lettuce I grow myself in richly composted soil. This has been my first year growing my own greens and it's been SO rewarding! I planted in late September/early October and I still have romaine, red sails, and buttercrunch lettuces growing (I've been using the "cut and come again" method). Collards, arugula, spinaches, kales, chinese (napa) cabbage, baby bok choi, broccolis, red giant mustard, and rainbow chard round out the garden this season and I've still got plenty. I'm really looking forward to trying my thumb at growing non-sweet fruits this summer -- tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini/summer squash, etc. If you're interested, check out www.growingyourgreens.com for some great video tutorials. He even has some on container gardening for really small spaces (like an apartment). Growing without pesticides does take some extra work (I go "slug hunting" every night, checking the plants for slugs; they like to come out after dark). But, I am very wary of those chemicals and eat conventional produce VERY rarely.
