Hi Shannon,
Regarding the "discrepancy" in calorie recommendations, you may want to view this thread:
http://www.vegsource.com/talk/raw/messages/100035395.html
Personally, I don't think their recommendations are as far apart as I once thought. At first glance, perhaps so, but it seems as though Harley & Freelea's philosophy is "eat more to live more," meaning that we need to eat crazy high amounts of glucose (fruit) in order to fuel crazy high amounts of physical activity. They are taking into account that physical fitness is essential to well-rounded health.
Dr. Graham states in The 80-10-10 Diet that, "My optimal calorie-consumption guideline is . . . base[d] . . . upon a healthful (high) level of physical activity -- the level that humans would have to maintain in order to obtain sufficient food in a more natural setting. . . . With the above in mind, I suggest that a healthy athletic person should utilize at least as many calories in physical endeavors as they use for their BMR. (Resting BMR is equivalent to 10 times your ideal body weight). . . . Good nutrition literally hinges upon us being fit enought to be healthy. by this I mean to say that even the most "perfect" diet will never result in true health unless it is accompanied by high-level fitness and all of the other essential elements of healthful living."
Where 30BAD diverges from Dr. Graham is in the emotional aspects of eating. 30BAD denies the existence of "emotional eating," and insists that more carbs is the blanket answer (see more on this in the thread link I pasted above). I don't agree, and that is why I seek help in this area from Dr. Graham.
Anyway, this is just my take on this issue. Perhaps Dr. Graham will correct me, which I certainly welcome! I love to learn, even if that means finding out I am off-base in my own thinking!
Again, I really want to encourage you to focus your energies on finding healthful ways -- outside of the food aspect -- to lower your stress levels.
I loved ric's Thomas Edison quote from yesterday:
"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”
So, hang in there, Shannon. We're rooting for you! :)
