Hi Sweetbananas!
You're story just reminded me so much of myself, I totally
understand how you feel!!! I have 6 years of solid education in the
field of architecture and now I am a Gyrotonic instructor and
professional artist, go figure!! But the transition out of my previous
field was brutal and I had to do it because it was destroying my
health, I didn't want to finish school when I was in it either and I
listened to everyone around me and went forward with it.
Your post makes me want to ask you a lot of questions:
Why did you go into nursing to begin with? Was it for practical
employment in the future reasons or a deep desire to help people,
etc? Go back to your original intentions and that may help you
decide.
Is there any other field that is pulling you by the heartstrings away
from nursing and into it?
Even with my experience, I am inclined to agree with the others,
HOWever, with one caveat: listen to your heart! If you heart is
insisting that you change course, consider listening to it. The reason
I point this out is that when you get a specific skill set i.e. nursing (or
architecture in my case) you are always going to be easily employed
in that field and the lure of a paycheck can be very limiting at times,
others around you will expect you to work in the field you finished
your degrees in, the peer pressure won't end here, sorry!!!!
You sound like you are still young and could potentially graduate and
immediately make the transition into another area through more
education, etc. but if you continue directly into your current field
straight into the workforce, it is tough to change after you do that!
You get stabilizing things like a husband, kids, mortgage, health
insurance, car payments etc and then changing course later becomes
much much harder than you ever imagined because you are making
decisions that affect others, not just yourself.
In the end, you only have a year, but my hope for you is that you
either fall back in love with nursing and have a great career in it, or
you graduate and go directly into another field right away that is a
true passion for you! All the best, I'm sure you will figure it all out!!!
