I noticed this just recently that many of the oranges that I buy are covered with a white powder. This is for both organic and conventional oranges and both navel as well as valencias. I just brought 25 pounds of conventional navels back from California (the seller said they are not sprayed with any 'cides). As I was cutting them my fingers became all white and the powder seems similar to a baby powder. Is this a new method to preserve the oranges? What is the powder made of? Could this be harmful? I know that baby powder can cause cancer when inhaled, I hope it is not that.
