As a lifelong sufferer from root abcess (all teeth
fully abcessed during teens-late 30s), I would say
it's best to remove - when the problem flares up
again. Your dentist is honest enough to inform you
that the abcess is draining, just bear in mind that
root canal work is more profitable for them than
extraction.
Never be afraid if extraction; I have never found it
painful, only a blessed relief from the pain and
toxicity caused by an active abcess.
On the bright side, in my 40s I had total extraction
(long overdue), and implant-supported dentures fitted
- best teeth I ever had! Worth saving for.
However, if you are luckier and simply have an
isolated abcesssed root, there is a homoeopathic
remedy you can use to encourage drainage: Myristica
Sebifera. You will not find it at the chemist, but
can order it, or obtain via a homoeopath. I have used
it to dramatic effect on abcesses, septic whitlows and
scratches.
As Dr G says, the problem will return, sooner or
later.
