Having had UC for over 25 years now I am kind of an expert on rectal bleeding. I am at a point where I can tell easily if the blood is from the inside or just something on the outside.

If it's the outside you probably have nothing to worry about. Sometimes the stool is a bit too large or hard for my poor little butt hole and this stresses the skin back there sometimes to the point of rupture. This fortunately (or unfortunately) comes with pain that is quite unpleasant. The blood is usually only on the toilet paper and it is really bright red like you just cut yourself shaving. As long as you stick with 811 this goes away in a couple of days. If you keep having large stools then you might reinjure the skin again and see it again. Still it's nothing to worry about at all.

If it's the inside then you will see usually a much darker more like brown blood and it will be on the stool as well as the paper. This is something I never see any longer since I switched to 811 in 2006. The internal kind can also be totally unimportant as there are many possibilities. Some of the least likely are the most dangerous. Wait and watch is the best thing to do if it's the inside. If it continues for a few weeks you might need to do something about it like diet modification or fasting.
