Subject:         Sorry, but 80-10-10 didn't work well for me

Hi everyone,
I've been a vegan for 8 years. Recently I read the 80-10-10 diet book and decided to try it, phasing it in as suggested, by eating mostly raw, but continuing to cook some vegetables that I can't stomach raw, such as yams, onions and mushrooms. Overall, I'd say that I was eating at least 80% raw. I also continued to drink green tea throughout the day, although the book says not to. I noticed that when I woke up in the morning my nose had much less mucus than normal and my digestive and bowel habits were much improved, almost perfect. I found that I didn't care to eat lunch and was comfortable on two meals a day of mostly fruit plus a large salad at night, along with some lightly steamed vegetables- a no-no on this diet, but I was just phasing it in, remember? In the week I was on the diet, I lost 7 pounds. I take this to be mostly water weight and I broke my personal best for doing pull-ups: 20 reps while now I can only do 17. The problem came towards the end if the week when my athletic performance started going downhill- was I starting to loose muscle mass? Also I suddenly became very hungry and started craving rice, lentils and nuts. I assumed that my body was accurately telling me something I needed. So,I indulged, binged, got a terrible belly ache and gas- on foods that never used to bother me. Regained all the weight I lost in one day. Almost a week later, I'm still not back to normal, a bit of gas and stomach pains. I'm wondering if 80-10-10 isn't a modified fast, which I broke too suddenly. At any rate, I intend to incorporate some of the things I learned from the book: eating more fruit, less cooked food and I'm going to limit my intake of nuts, legumes and grain- but not give them up entirely. I can't seem to sustain myself entirely on fruits and raw vegetables- not in the amounts that I can eat.
