I was just having this chat with a neighbor of mine, he just got back from Mackinaw Island in upper Michigan. They do not allow cars on the Island. You get around by bike and horse. I went up there once and the first thing I noticed when I got off the ferry and walked into town, NO CAR HUM. I realized how much car hum is part of my background. It was instantly relaxing to get away from it. I would say the amount of background noise we deal with is pretty large. You might try some sensory isolation ... headphones w good music works or even just put on some ear protection for 10 mintutes and meditate. I was at my eye doctor in a dark room in the middle of the building last week and it was oddly quiet and relaxing.
