"I thought it would be good for me to follow your plan 90-95% of the time and then add in more dense foods like nuts,grains, roots, etc" roots aren't necessarily more dense (calorically) than fruits. for example: 100g banana = 89cals 100g boiled potato = 78cals 100g carrot = 41cals 100g cooked beets = 44cals just wanted to point that out.
