Greens are a must! for a frugivore For the aspiring frugivore, luscious sweet fruits are an obvious choice, and are attractive and appealing in color, taste, and texture. Because they provide quick energy and satiation, and because they feel satisfying to the body and mind, it can be tempting or easy to neglect or underestimate the importance of balancing ones diet with vegetables and vegetable fruits, primarily tender, non-bitter greens like celery, lettuce, and spinach, and the vegetable fruits like cucumber, tomato and yellow peppers. This neglect will have dire consequences, and can destroy health permanently and severely. It is quite possible to subsist for significant periods of time on sweet fruits alone, but this is a deadly trap that will not result in optimum health or long-term fitness, performance, and vitality. Without foods rich in sodium, calcium, chloride, phosphate, carbonate, and potassium, serious imbalances will occur, resulting in a situation in which the body is forced to draw minerals from the bones and teeth in order to keep the electrolyte balance on an even keel, and the metabolism running. Long-term neglect of these important foods can result in irreversible damage, or create a situation that takes years to reverse. True mental clarity and calmness can only result when the body is supplied with these minerals. Often times, a frugivore develops the misconception that only athletes or people performing vigorous physical activity need to concern themselves with sodium/potassium replenishment, but this is far from true. Anybody, no matter if they are in a hot climate or a freezing cold climate, or if they are sedentary or active, will regularly need to consume foods rich in sodium, magnesium, and trace minerals. While it is true that an athlete will run into serious trouble sooner than a sedentary person, this does not mean that the sedentary individual is not steadily creating the mineral imbalances and deficiencies that will catch up with them and slowly degrade their health. Not having this knowledge can be deadly in a cold climate. Often, because of the misconceived idea promoted by pseudo- practitioners of health that greens are "cooling" foods, frugivores in cold climates avoid celery and lettuce, believing that they will be better able to stay warm by only focusing on fruits, or even worse, nuts. In reality, the body can never efficiently or reliably warm itself or maintain a healthy temperature in the cold without regular and large intake of sodium. Without sodium, the human body will find itself in a permanently chilled state, and all of the organs, especially the liver, kidneys, pancreas, and heart, will begin to function inefficiently and sluggishly. The problem is compounded by the fact that the human body can sometimes sweat even more in a cold climate than in a warm climate, because it is bundled up in layers of clothing. Many individuals have experienced deadly hyponatremia, even in the cold, because they did not replace the sodium they lost in their sweat and urine. Severe muscle cramps, mental confusion and delusion, muscle weakness, and epileptic seizures can be the result. Without a daily food rich in calcium and magnesium, like lettuce, hypocalcemia can result, creating a weakened immune system and susceptibility to infection, tooth and bone loss, and osteoporosis. Rather than waiting for dire conditions or symptoms to develop, it is far better to develop early on the habit of regularly consuming greens and non-sweet fruits on a daily basis, preferably with every meal, and even between meals. Snacking on celery or lettuce will help develop stable blood sugar, and will help balance the imbalanced spikes in insulin brought about by a lifetime of unhealthful eating. Delicious soups, smoothies, and dressings can be made by blending greens with non-sweet fruits, and the more these types of foods are included, the more the frugivore diet will result in vitality and strength, instead of weakness, drowsiness and spaciness. A lifetime of health can only be ensured by developing this practice and maintaining it without fail. The frugivore diet is only complete when this is given the utmost importance. Once it becomes habitual, the incorporation of these foods will become instinctual and natural. It is only because of the degraded instincts that humans would even consider the sick and unhealthful neglect of these pillars and cornerstones of nutrition and life.
