To increase muscle size, it is valuable to work the muscles to failure, or very near failure. You can do this with high reps or low. Either way, the last rep will be the one that takes you to failure. If you are not recovering fully enough to match your previous efforts, take more time off from that specific exercise, and do another. This is why many strength athletes and body builders set up a program that only works a few body parts each day, so that they can alternate on a longer schedule.
