| | Subject: | What to eat during a marathon??? | |
Date: | November 4, 2009 at 7:44 am PST |
Some background . . . I've never run in my life before April of this year. I'm 39 years old and weighed 312 lbs. I starting exercising/running in April and have lost 70 pounds. I ran a half marathon in Sept and barely finished - but I finished. I'm continuing and now training for a full marathon in January (I run for 1 min 30 sec and walk for 1 min). For my entire adult life I've been a meat and potatoes kind of guy. My wife is now an 80/10/10 purist and I am slowly migrating that way. Trying very hard at that - it was be difficult for me but I'm getting there. I'm eating lots of bananas now as I have noticed the difference in my running. The night before a long run I'll eat 10 bananas or so and then another 5 the morning of. I seem to be hitting a wall at about 10 miles (I'm up to 20 now). It's not that my muscles hurt. I simply have no energy to keep going. I push myself through it, but is is very challenging. I've gone the way of gels and have a gel and water every 3 miles (about 40 minutes). Not sure this is helping. Does anyone have some advice. Should I be fueling during the long runs and marathon? If so, with what, how much, and how often. Right now, I feel that without the gels I'd never make it, so it seems like i need something. My last long run (20 miles) took me 5 hours. That is a long time for exercising considering I was a couch potato 8 months ago. Thank you - David
