The unemployment rate has specific limitations. It can't differentiate between full-time and part-time jobs. It doesn't account for people who are underemployed, or working in jobs for which they are overqualified because they can't find a good job. It won't tell you how many people have become so discouraged in their job search that they have given up hope of finding a job. But you do have eyes don't you? How many empty business places do you see that were filled a few years ago? I live in an area that has consistently had a number BELOW the national unemployment rate and I can see the results of this crappy economy every day. You will be hard-pressed to find anyone who will tell you they are feeling better off. I know a lot of people who are under-employed .... many who WERE in the aerospace and defense industries. They might not be unemployed but their standard of living has gone down. Ssme thing with all the young people graduating from college working in the restaurants and other low- paying jobs ..... there might be jobs....but where are GOOD jobs? Hard to find and becoming scarcer everyday. I bet if you think really hard.... you can think of some major manufacturing companies that went out of business in the last 3 years... not from the jobs going to other countries... they went OUT OF BUSINESS. My dad's hometown in Indiana.... prime example. Major manufacturer of motor homes, manufactured homes, etc... all dried up. Not gone to another country... just gone.
