I reinstall XP every three months (or more often) just to keep it running well. I use Acronis True Image to revert to how the machine was at the time of a fresh install of the OS and all my most important apps. That's the best workaround I could find to minimize Microsoft's bugginess. I also have to be VERY diligent with my use of antivirus. I do a full system scan often. Linux is designed better to avoid all that crap. I still have antivirus under Linux just in case, but it's extremely unlikely I'll catch anything.
