With fair compensation from the electric power companies there, plus government incentives, excess power from a person's solar system, or wind turbines, is compensated at $0.5/kwhr. The Toledo Edison, a division of First Energy, has offered me 2-3 cents/kwhr for any excess I might pump into their grid. They have also informed me that they're not at all proposing that I set myself up as a mini power company. In other words, I would be allowed to pump only a certain amount of electricity into their grid. I don't have a number on that amount yet. In a TV show last week, on NOVA, I think, the story of Germany's solar power program was presented. Many people install excess capacity for the express purpose of making money on the sale of electricity to their neighbors. What a deal! However, right now, with existing technologies, we can reduce our GHG emissions in the neighborhood of 40-50%. I outlined what I've done in that regard, in a thread of a few days ago. Please note that going vegan, from the standard American diet, trimmed my emissions by 1.5 tons of CO2/yr. That's something anyone can do overnight, along with replacing their incandescents with CFLs, putting on thermal underwear, and turning their stats down. I am looking forward to putting solar panels in my backyard. Maybe within the next 3 yrs or so.
