1) People don't think much about this sort of thing and there isn't a lot of incentive or popular exposure to the merits of quality knives, and there is a seeming lack of pride in good tools when it comes ot the kitchen -- therefore it's total garbage people end up buying, in the end. Cutco is basically by definition marketed to people who know nothing about knives.

2) The sales tactics use the trust you have in your family and friends to weaken your resolve when you're approached with a "demonstration".
