We recently sat through a Cutco presentation. I've known of Cutco knives almost since I can remember but have never owned one. I've run across an example or two at friends but still had very little exposure.

The presentation was the salesman's first, which I didn't hold against him.

I was prepared to buy a decent set of knives for my wife. She's made do with two or three cheap sets that we've probably spent a total of $150 for. When I first saw the prices I was a little taken back, but knew that if I persisted I would be offered a better deal so I started trying to figure out about what each knife cost. The easiest to calculate was the steak/table knives that are offered as an add on to each of the basic sets. Lo and behold the price came out to be $25 per knife for a butter/pseudo steak knife. There was an exception to this, the ultimate set wanted to charge you $500 for 12 knives. That works out to be almost $42 per butter/pseudo steak knife.

As the presentation came to a close I expressed a dismay at the costs of the table knives and also informed him that we made it a policy to never buy the night of the presentation. He said that he had been asked to call his supervisor and would that be alright. I said sure. Now I'd get to talk to the barracuda and get to find out about what they would really sell these for. $500 discount on the $2000 ultimate set if I would buy that night. I thanked him for his time, confirmed that we don't buy on the night of the presentation and added that I needed to do some more research.

We've spoken briefly since and we've not decided yea or nay yet, but we will probably buy something else. I like shopping in stores where I can compare similar products and choose according to my perceived needs and or wants.

I wonder sometimes if it wouldn't be better to just go out and buy some really good hunting knives about the right size and weight. They're built for all kinds of abuse and hold their edge really well. It would probably be cheaper and each would have it's own scabbard. Nah, I don't think my wife would go for it.
