It's possible that you may have left the heat on high for too long. For curries, which are a bit more delicate, you need to turn the heat down to low as soon as the pot reaches full pressure. The heat is not as critical for larger beans like black, pinto or kidney, but you want to be more careful with lentils - they're more prone to burning, especially the red ones.

The timing is very accurate in the Sass book. The only times I've had any problems is when I've failed to turn the heat down quickly enough. You can even take the pot totally off the stove while the burner stabilizes to a lower heat.
