Subject: Beans: to soak or not to soak?

I've been cooking beans in my pressure cooker for years, and I very rarely soak them first. My favorite thing to make is "refried" beans (not really refried, just mashed pinto beans really). I'll rinse off 1 lb beans, put them in the pot with 7 cups water, some garlic cloves, a couple of dried chiles, and a little olive oil, then cook at high pressure for 70 min, then drain, salt and mash. They always come out perfect and they're done just 90 minutes after I come home form work. I've tried soaking first, and the only difference is they're a little paler in color.
What is the advantage of pre-soaking? Is it just the "de-gassing" effect?
