I use my inserts without any lids. They are pretty much unnecessary if you vent steam after closing the main lid for a couple of minutes.(actually it's your pressure cooker that should vent :-) I read somewhere that this release purges oxygen from the pc & reduces foaming. Whatever the mechanism, it does work. That's funny about what you thought about "Emily's Post". :-)
