All dried beans foam and froth which can potentially clog the vent/valves. Oil minimizes the foaming and I don't know of any other way to avoid that, its just the nature of beans. The valves on the Fagor and KR are much smaller than the vent pipe on your Presto. The recipes provided by the manufactures of both brands use oil when cooking dried beans. When in doubt I would err on the side of the manufacturer rather than create a potential problem if the valves got blocked.
