Janet. You're right. It's not impossible. I called Presto this morning. The service advisor said it was probably the seal ring binding the air vent/cover lock mechanism. She said to push the seal ring toward the center of the unit with a butter knife, and try opening it at the same time. That didn't work, and I told her it probably wouldn't, because the stoppage sounded, and felt like metal to metal. I tried her suggestion, and sure enough, it didn't work. So I looked under the top handle where you can see the locking pin, and saw a piece of metal that raises when you try to twist the top off. So I stuck a screw driver under that flat piece of metal, holding it up as I tried to open the unit. That worked, and I'm a happy fella, because I had a new blend of beans and vegetables in there, which I was sure would be tasty, and they are. Food saved! Thanks for your input. Maybe this will help somebody else in the future. Jack ps. I stuck the whole pot in the refrigerator overnight, so no harm done.
