I would start with the bigger one and if you want a second one I would go for the smaller one. We are a 3 person family (the teenager is seldom home) and I use at least one pc a day. I don't worry about the size of the cooker when I use it. If I have a stainless steel basket to cook yams, artichokes, winter squash, potatoes, beets.... or whatever, it really fits better in a bigger cooker. If I just want to cook up a little bit of grain, it does just as well in a big cooker as in a smaller one. So, you see, if you only want to start with one cooker, it would be better to start with a bigger one.

BTW, I have 5 cookers; 1 4.5, 3 7 (?), a big canning pc.... oh, and a littler one than the 4.5. I hardly ever use it. I always grab the 3 big ones when I cook.
