Everyone's mileage may vary on foaming, depending on hardness of water and altitude, among other things. If you are using a 1st generation PC (that is, an old-fashioned jiggle top, even if it's got the newer safety features), then you can tell there is foaming by the amount of "spew" you get out and around the jiggle top. (c:

I think if the recipe calls for olive oil (or another vegetable oil) to control foaming and you omit it because all added oil is unnecessary for (and actually harmful for) health, you might consider adding kombu instead.

Otherwise, I'm all for using nothing when nothing is necessary. Saves money, time and kombu for another day.
