Actually I think it's mostly BIG, and is typically aluminum and a jiggletop (the old-fashioned ones, anyway) and you sit the cans/jars on a rack inside with a little water to bring the steam pressure up to seal the jars.

Probably weren't allowed in the kitchen in case it blew up--and because it gave your mom a precious break from you. ROFL. (I know that's why my mom canned!)
