I got this PC from India because I wasn't quite sure how the American ones were and I'm used to this type so...

But yes, what it does is that the pressure builds up to a certain point and then it whistles to let the pressure out. After you turn off the heat source, the pressure slowly releases and you can pull up on the "whistle" to make it release quickly.

I haven't had any safety concerns yet. The good thing about the whistles is that I can forget I have something on the stove and the whistles are there to remind me! :)

And my mom's recipes never come with a "cooking time" - it's always 'wait for 4 whistles' or 'wait just one whistle'
