Sounds like you got a very good deal on the pressure cooker. I suggest that you get the book "Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure" by Lorna Sass. The book contains an enormous amount of information. I suppose that the divided insert is to allow the separate cooking of different foods in one pot. The issue with that is if you try to cook things with differing cooking times required you will either have something undercooked or something over cooked. This is not so noticable when you cook everything together. The inserts also are used for elevating greens or vegetables out of the water to steam them. I personally use one of those three legged fan types of steamers to steam things, you can also use it in non pressure pots. Do get Sass' book and use it as a reference as well as a source of recipes, which are all very good.
