It sounds like the pressure gauge assembly isn't on correctly. The Magefesa I have has three pieces.

A black flat circular piece covering with a V area and a hole in the middle. This piece sits directly on the lid.

Then there's the "knob" with the red pressure indicator. This piece feed through the top of the lid, and thus also through the black piece.

A round nut (I think that's what it's called) that screws onto the bottom of the knob piece. This is on the bottom of the lid.

The lid on mine has two notches in the whole. You need to line up the black piece and the knob all right with the lid. The knob has two notches on it. It really helps to follow the instructions exactly.

I suggest putting water in it and playing with getting it put together just right. I'd been lazy and washed the lid assembly together after the first few times I used it. The first time I used it after separating all the pieces, I had exactly the problems you're describing. Getting it assembled exactly right fixed it all.
