I asked Dr. McDougall your question. Here's his response: The reason is that once a person has aged he has successfully overcome the risks of dying from his younger years. Like the life expectancy of a baby may be 78 years, But the life expectancy of an 85 year old may be 5 years. It cannot be minus 7 years. He enters a new class of people because of his age -- the weak and unlucky have already died off.
