jim, i'm not arguing whether obama does cigarettes or not. my point is that mcdougall has neither ignored nor glossed over the issue since he clearly states the situation: "He has quit smoking on several occasions and currently uses Nicorette gum with success. He promises his wife, Michelle, he will give up smoking." from this statement, one can easily infer: 1. obama quit, started, quit, started etc who knows how many times. so i really don't see why you have gone all nutso with mcdougall on this matter since he has covered it quite effectively and has given it due respect. i really doubt if the political situation pivots around whether obama will or won't smoke (anymore than the nicorette company's success is dependent upon whether their product did or didn't produce the claimed result on a presidential nominee). if you want to be upset with obama for going back and forth, that's fine with me. i am curious as to why you "tend not to believe much of anything he says". from what i've seen, he seems to be reasonably honest at least as far as most politicians go. what exactly is your rationale for not believing obama? or are you just understandably suspicious of all politicians?

2. that presently he is not smoking with the help of the gum (or may be it was those horrid gum commercials that scared him).
3. that even though he is experiencing success right now, he is aware of his past failures and therefore has promised his wife that he really will quit (admittedly, we do not have a timetable for withdrawal).
