And in the US we are clearly headed in that direction, if not there already. The corporations control the information we get largely (other than on the web, but they're working on that), they control the government (100% control over GOP and strong grip on many Dems as well).
Is the US imperialist? Imperialist means "of or pertaining to an empire." The historic empires that come to mind are the British Empire, French Empire, Russian Empire, Byzantine Empire, or Roman Empire. These were countries which used military to capture and control large parts of the world outside their national region, and to take resources from them and control local populations. I do think the US has for decades exhibited the traits of empire, and under Cheney, absolutely. We come up with pretexts to invade other countries, and those countries happen to have a lot of wealth we want to control. So yes, I think it's right to consider America an empire.
Chavez is an interesting character. Since you're a rightwinger you probably have only been exposed to Fox News-type propaganda, where they try to demonize the guy. The problem with Chavez is not that he's a fascist -- he's not. He's had elections which have gone against him, and he accepts the result. The problem the US has with him is that he's a champion of the masses, the little guy. And he's actually democratic, so that the big corporations and elite do not have the kind of power and control they enjoyed under previous regimes. And since the US works by plunder and screwing people over, they don't like it when someone steps up and stops them. This is why the US has tried to topple Chavez a few times, because the US government likes money and power for their cronies, not "democracy."
But since you obviously have a Fox news-type view of the world, it's like we speak different languages, so you can't really grasp where people like me are on these questions.
