I would like to share my experience of vegetarian discrimination. Today was the very first day of school for my 4 year old daughter. We were all anticipating a very exciting and enjoyable day for her. When we picked her up after school we talked to the teacher to see how things went and the report was good except that she ate almost nothing for lunch. She was given cauliflower, a biscuit and a piece of ham. She ate only the biscuit. We are vegetarian and my daughter gags at the smell of meat. This was not a learned response, she has always been that way. We were told that they would not stop offering her meat until we brought a note from our doctor stating that it was "ok for her to be vegetarian"!!!! On the application for the school we had informed them at least 3 times that she was not to be given meat at any time as it is against our family beliefs. They said nothing before the first day or during the day. They could have called to see if we would bring something for her just for today. So our 4 year old went all day with nothing but a biscuit. To make things worse the school/daycare is at Indiana University. They read the registration forms and gave her ham anyway. They should know better. What a terrible thing to do and what an odd policy. We are pulling her out of the school and considering filing discrimination charges against the school. What are your thoughts?
