I am a single parent, as a matter of fact.. and I believe I do an excellent job.
Life is not always simple and clear cut. I didn't set out to be a single parent. I am very responsible. i had a partner who couldn't cope and walked out. i didn't expect it, i believed we were together for life. things don't always work out.
i get quite tired of attacks on single parents - that they have no morals, are irresponsible etc.
I work part time from home, but that is a choice. I respect single parents who choose to stay at home, and feel very grateful to live in a country which still prioritises kids wellbeing over the economy. Although there are people who say, why should our taxes pay for these irresponsible people, I say - such people are mean spirited. it's a bit like saying "i don't drive on that road, why should i pay for it." it's mean spirited.
here in Australia single parents get a pension. So I have less stress than single parents in america who get not much support at all. Possible because America is a lot more Christian based than Australia. Studies like the one above are all about pushing people into the workforce and fail to recognise the hard work that goes into raising an adult.
I think such studies were used to destroy the welfare system in America and I fear the same will happen here - ie. making it seem like all single parents are irresponsible.
"Studies" have been created to prove all kinds of things, but as a graduate of social sciences I have a fairly healthy skepticism for "studies." Like the old saying goes "for every expert, there is an equal and opposite expert."
I am a very responsible and conscious parent, and get tired of all these "studies" which show my son has an inferior up bringing. He doesn't.
