We homeschooled for 4 years, and the boys did go to a private preschool/pre-k program for 1 year, but I was there all the time... helping the teachers, doing bulletin boards, observing, etc.. Instead of feeling forced to send them to public school, I wish I could afford to send them back to that school (it went from 3yr. old preschool to 12th grade!!) because it was really a community of like-minded people, and they were really interested in the whole child... not just how much stuff they could cram into their heads in 9 months- you know? I think that part of the reason private schools have the reputation for being better is just because people have to invest in it. Once people are paying, then they're more willing to get their money's worth and make the school a better place. Homeschooling is like that, too. It's a big time investment, and you know that it's only going to be as good as the committment you make. Since it's for your children, you are completely willing to do what it takes. I had problems with setting consistant schedules, but had to be organized because we never would have accomplished anything with my ADD otherwise. My boys were at an age where quantity was important to their sense of accomplishment. They were always so eager to show their father, "Look at how many papers I did today, Daddy!" And we used Laurel Springs School to get curriculum, and they also assigned us a teacher who helped me with setting grades, doing the paperwork for their transcript and whatever, and gave me encouragement when I needed it. She also happened to live an hour's drive away and offered the boys free music and art classes, which she taught out of her home, occasionally. It was really nice.
