I'm wary to post this on here, at the risk of getting 100 posts back, but this board has been pretty slow lately so I think it'll be okay. My son is due in 3 days, and the circumcision debate has begun in my house. My doctor gave me a pamphlet on it stating that there aren't any medical benefits to getting it done, and that there are risk factors for infection, etc. A friend of mine who's a chiropractor is very against it and was telling me that only about half of North Americans are getting it done nowadays and that she saw a video of it in med school and it was pretty awful. My sister in law is also against it, saying it's just a cosmetic thing and has no purpose in today's medical world. On the pro-circumcision side is my husband, my mom and my sister. DH wants it done "because". Period, end of discussion. My mom knew some guy who had it done when he was 25, so therefore she feels that the majority of uncircumsized guys wish that they were. She also feels that most women think uncircumsized guys are gross and so we should have it done so that his future girlfriend(s) will appreciate it. My sister has out-of-date info about cancer risks, and also just plain wants it done. I'm pretty much on the fence about this. I'm not concerned about the chance of the doctor 'slipping' and maiming my kid - I think the chances of that are pretty low. But I am worried about causing pain, infection, and about introducing oral Tylenol, sugar soothers, topical anaesthetics and injectable anaesthetics to someone who is only a few days old (who knows what all that stress and foreign substances could do to his system??). However, tonnes of guys get this done and come out totally fine. So the chances are that my son will be totally fine, with little to no complications. But do I want to do this? Any input, from either guys or girls, parents or spouses, would really be appreciated. Thanks, and sorry for the long-winded post.
