Many of the discussion forums I participate in are predominantly American, so this past weekend, I have been seeing many posts along the lines of "Happy Memorial Day". Is is just me or does that strike people as a bit odd? What is happy about a day set aside to remember those killed or wounded in war?

Irrespective of what we think of the causes for which soldiers are asked to fight, irrespective of what we think of the politicians who sign their orders, and even irrespective of what we think of the soldiers' decisions to obey those orders, I think it is appropriate for all of us, and especially pacifists, to acknowledge the terrible costs that war imposes on soldiers and civilians.

Treating Memorial Day as just another party long weekend so totally misses its point. I suppose that we are lucky in Canada that our equivalent day, Remembrance Day, is held on November 11th. It often falls in mid-week, denying the association with a "long weekend", and the weather is seldom conducive to barbecues or car races. While we have many people for whom Remembrance Day is just another day off, it seems to have retained its solemn character.

So, my hope is that everyone had a solemn, thoughtful and respectful Memorial Day.
