Subject: Taking a peace seminar class- some comments and questions...
Date: April 2, 2004 at 10:46 am PST
Hello everyone. I have always believed in non-violence but never identified myself as a pacifist because the second you label yourself you have to be able to defend yourself against everyone who wants to challenge you and i just wasn't ready for that yet. However, now i'm feeling like i am ready. In my peace seminar class at my college, we've been discussing pacifism lately and arguments for and against it. The problem i'm having is that the class keeps falling back to ONE argument against pacifism: How would we have taken care of Hitler or Pol Pot without any violence? No matter how long we talk about pacifism being such a great idea, we always come back to this. And it seems to be making some of the other classmates' doubt whether pacifism could really work in all circumstances. Any comments or suggestions? Thanks!
