Hopefully you already got the answer to your question (posted April 10, 2010). In most states the answer is they can not, may be in the future.

However, being a vegan they could point out that you might be deficient in B12 and Iodine. Both could contribute to yous symptoms, via anemia and low thyroid function.

You could have your MD order:

1)MMA and Homocysteine test(to rule out Vit B12 defiency)
2) Full thyroid panel (TSH, T3, Free T3, T4, Reverse 3, TPOa, TBGa) to properly evaluate thyroid function.

Please, notice two things, most physician would rarely order these teste unless they are properly trained in assessing both issues. Second, you could order these test yourself online in some states.
