I am a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist in private practice in California for 10 years. I was exploring a vegan diet for its health benefits when I learned about animal exploitation and instantly became an ethical vegan (and part-time activist). Many clients ask me for nutritional advice. In the past, as an omnivore, if they didnít have complex or severe medical conditions, I was happy to offer some basic guidance. (Dietetics is a branch of Chinese Medicine. Also Iíve always been interested in nutrition and studied it on my own.)

Since Iíve become vegan, Iíve read a lot of the popular vegan-oriented health and nutrition literature (e.g. Barnard, Esselstyn, McDougall, Campbell, Davis, Melina, Fuhrman...). Iíve also read works by Ornish, Willett and Nestle. I would love to see in-depth assessments of the conclusions reached by these Ďexperts,í especially comparisons of their differing opinions on one subject. Where is the preponderance of evidence? (For example: the role of dairy consumption in causing or preventing osteoporosis) Can you recommend particular trusted sources for such information (other than technical textbooks)?

Iíve come to believe that many conditions should first be treated with diet modification (when the person is interested). And I'd like to give my clients more counseling. Food and health look more complex to me now so I realize I should have a nutrition credential. I'm just starting to look into the CNS (an RD seems too time-consuming at this point in my career).
