Hi Earthgirl,
Commendations and congratulations on your thought process and decision-making! It's my pleasure to offer the board---it's my form of veg'n activism.
When I started the RD classes, I was fortunate to have worked for state government for 12 years. Such tenure provided me 4 weeks of leave per year. Although some classes were at night, some were in the afternoon. Also fortunately, the RD program was relatively small, which provided the primary professor leeway to plan her days as she liked. This meant instead of one-hour MWF classes at 12 noon, we had a Wed afternoon class at 3:00 p.m., minimizing my leave from work.
My co-workers were less than pleased with my schedule, but that was their problem. How I used my the leave to which I was entitled was my business, and that's what I told them. The boss may have privately agreed with my co-workers, but was obligated to grant leave requests (within reason).
Be sure to review my earlier post "Other options for those in challenging circumstances" for other possibilities.
Hope that helps,
Mark Rifkin, MS, RD, LDN
