The China Study is epidemiological, but I think Campbell has done laboratory controlled studies as well. I think the studies he's done have been "on both sides of the fence": both to prove the need for animal protein and, later, to show the correlation between consumption of animal protein and the development of cancer. Isn't that where he came up with the belief that casein is one of the most carcinogenic substances known to man?
