I know my dilemma sounds perhaps a bit odd but here it is. I’m looking for any suggestions for something of a snack substitute for popcorn.

I have something like an addiction to seemingly the most benign of substances – no butter, no salt, plain air popped popcorn.

I like to graze on usually two large bowls (1 bowl=approx 1 cup of popcorn) in the late evening before going to bed. I find it relaxing and it affords a pleasant, full feeling with relatively few calories. The fiber it provides seems beneficial for regularity. Its part of winding down and most often with television (generally news shows) and looking at the newspaper as well.

Here’s what bugs me though. The nightly ritual feels compulsive and like an addiction – a psychological /behavioral dynamic I don’t like. But an even greater concern is the tendency of this habit to keep me up late and quite frequently much later than I’d prefer. One bowl will lead to two and then maybe a third and something will be engaging on television – and then I’m dragging off to bed later then is preferable for a good night’s sleep. Also if I want to engage in more serious reading or study it’s hard to do because I’ll won’t likely resist the popcorn relaxing scenario just described.

So – any suggestions for a snack that approximates the beneficial attributes of air popped popcorn (low calorie, low to no fat, inexpensive) but is not as time consuming to eat?

Thank you,
Tyler
