Nuts are not only high in fat and calories, they are also high in calorie density and low in fiber on a per calorie basis. Several studies have shown that as you increase the calorie density of diet in free living individuals, their likelihood of overeating and consuming excess calories, goes up.

In a nation where 67% of us are overweight and 33% are obese, this becomes an issue.

I think no more than an ounce or two and day, for most people, is fine. The problem with many people though, is once the start, they can't stop.

They are fine. Nutritionally speaking, I would say the English Walnut may be the best.
