Hi Marissa
You will find my view discussed here in this long thread
http://www.vegsource.com/talk/novick/messages/301.html
I am more concerned what someone does most of the time then any "label" you put on them.
In the quest for health, which is the number one reason most people become vegetarian or vegan, many people follow vegetarian/vegan diets that are not healthy.
If I could remove one food from the food supply, it would be dairy products.
In regard to health, Is a vegan or vegetarian diet required for optimal health? No. But the diet would be virtually or mostly plant foods.
If you have an optimized healthy vegan/vegetarian diet, would adding animal products to it, make it any better? No.
Focus on what is most important to get you where you want to go.
In Health
Jeff
