Over the last 5 years my cholesterol has been low. It has ranged from 139-166. My doctor noted that my HGL is a little lower than they like to see but my ratio of HGL to LGL has been good so my doctor has been satesfied there.
My triglycerides have been a problem. They got up to 250 mg/dl. Over the years I noticed that my triglycerides seem to go along with my weight. When I loose weight my triglycerides go down and when I gain it they go back up.
My doctor put me on 500 mg IR Niacin that I take before bed and it seems to have helped a little, my triglycerides went down a few points, my HGL up a few and my LGL down a few.
I have a checkup in a week and my doctor said if my triglycerides aren't below 200 she wants to put me on Lovaza. Looking up the drug it seems to be for people with dangerously high triglycerides >=500.
I did loose 20 lbs since last checkup so that may help my triglycerides but if I'm still over 200 she is going to try to talk me into Lovaza. One year when I lost a lot of weight my triglycerides came down to 144 but I gained most of the weight back and my triglycerides went back up.
My diet is pretty good, I eat a low fat near-vegan vegetarian diet. I don't have a lot of room for improvement here.
Is glucomannan an good option? I read it can help weight loss and improve lipid profiles.
